Sea Turtle Conservation

Protecting our Flippered Friends

About

Florida hosts the nesting beaches that many sea turtles call home and instinctively return to. These species include Loggerhead, Green, Kemp's Ridley, and the hulking Leatherback sea turtles. Sea turtles have inhabited this planet for over a hundred million years, but their habitat is facing modern day threats in the form of coastal development, pollution, and climate change that threaten their survival. State and federal laws like the Endangered Species Act help protect sea turtles. Additionally, conservation efforts from everyone including you are essential to ensure that future generations of turtles will be around for future generations of humans to witness and appreciate.

Sign The Sea Turtle Nesting Residential Lighting Ordinance Petition 📢

🖊 3 people have signed this petition and support this cause.

Help protect local sea turtles by signing this petition to enact a new ordinance that restricts the lighting in and around beachfront properties. Bright lights along the shoreline can confuse sea turtle hatchlings because they are guided by the gentle moonlight to find their way to sea. By requiring downward directed, low wattage, red-colored lighting during nesting season, we can help hatchlings avoid becoming disoriented by harmful lights and give them a better chance at survival to one day come back to our beaches for future generations.
